Over 40 + years ago steel for the World Trade Center (WTC) was manufactured in the heart of Chester County in the city of Coatesville. Large steel beams (trees) were loaded on flat bed train cars and transported to New York City where they reached what was though to be there final destination. 40 years later on September 11th, 2001 tragedy struck the nation as terrorist guide two air planes into the twin towers causing them to collapse to the ground. Most of the trees that were manufactured in Coatesville were still standing after the collapse. When you look at rescue pictures and pictures of the after math most of the steel that is standing vertical in pictures are was what local steel workers consider the trees. The Greystone Society of Coatesville has been working since 2006 to bring these steel pieces back to Coatesville to erect a memorial not only for the first responders but for the steel workers who manufactured and shipped this significant trees. Today members from Elverson EMS were honored to have the opportunity to attend a ceremony in the city of Coatesville. The ceremony included a 28 truck convoy that originated in Newark, NJ and traveled about 8 hours to Coatesville. After the convoy arrived members had the chance to touch the steel and thank the truck drivers for a very emotional show. Next everyone gathered at Lukens historical building for a ceremony honoring first responder, steel workers, and members of the Greystone Society for the hard work in getting the steel back to its birth place. Area first responders were honored to meet and talk with three retired FDNY firefighter through out the day. Elverson EMS would like to thank the Chester County Fire Chief's Assoc. for inviting us to this memorable event.
